Dr. Michael Pegelow, DVM
Dr. Michael Pegelow graduated from the University of Florida in 1999 with a degree in Zoology with honors. In 2004 he completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree also at the University of Florida. He began practicing at Dixie Animal Hospital in 2004. Dr. Pegelow’s professional specialties include veterinary dermatology, dentistry, and internal medicine. When he is not caring for animals at the hospital, Dr. Pegelow enjoys spending as much time as possible with his wife, daughter, and son. His family also includes an adopted terrier mix named Chewie and a three cats named Rocky, Spot and Data.
Dr. Pegelow also runs the animal adoption program at Dixie Animal Hospital which has found homes for more than 400 cats and dogs since 2006!

Dr. Lara Sparks, DVM
Dr. Lara Sparks graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1999 with a degree in Psychology and Natural Sciences with honors. In 2005 she completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Louisiana State University. In 2006 she returned to her home town of Miami practicing for 11 years at Ponce Animal Clinic in Coral Gables. Her professional specialties include veterinary dermatology, dentistry, and internal medicine. Dr. Sparks is a Fear Free Certified Professional; completing 9 hours of veterinary education with stringent testing and C.E. requirements. In addition to caring for your animals her interests include golf, Pilates, Barre classes, boot camp classes, and volunteer work with shelter pets and rescue organizations. Dr. Sparks grew up with and has personally owned many different breeds of dogs. She has a special affinity for Rottweilers, Shih Tzus and King Charles Cavaliers. She has two dogs currently; Stella and Jax.
Dr. Jesenia Carnero DVM
Dr. Jesenia Carnero is a Miami native born of Cuban parents. She is fluent in both English and Spanish. She graduated from Southwest Miami Senior High and studied Biology at Florida International University. In 2005, Dr. Carnero completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Ross University in St. Kitts & Nevis. She concluded with her final year of clinical rotations at Louisiana State University. Dr. Carnero continued with a small animal medicine and surgery rotating internship at Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island in 2011. She has practiced in both New York and Miami and her special interests include small animal medicine and emergency medicine. She is currently enrolled in a small animal soft tissue ultrasound course. Dr. Carnero has two pets of her own; an adorable yorkie named Sophie and a senior cat named Dusty. In her spare time she is training for the next half marathon, learning to play the piano and learning to golf.
Dr. Samantha Carter, DVM
Dr. Carter was born in Valdosta, GA and spent her formative years with her sister and parents in beautiful, rural VA on a large farm with horses and other animals. The idyllic surroundings encouraged a natural interest and love for animals. Early influence from her parents with a focus on reading and making good grades paved the way for her later success in college and veterinary school. Eventually the family of four moved to her parents’ native Miami, Florida, where she earned a BS in Biology and began post-graduate studies in comparative immunology research before transferring to UF in Gainesville. In 2001 she graduated from UFCVM, with studies focused on small animal medicine and surgery. After graduation she worked in a busy 24-hour hospital, where a love for emergency medicine began and continues to be part of her professional life. Other professional interests include high volume spay-neuter/shelter work, soft tissue surgery and dentistry. She is an avid equestrian, loves gardening, vegetarian cooking and international travel. Her latest favorite destination: India.
Dr. Carmen Morales, DVM
Dr. Carmen Morales was born in Cuba, but grew up in Miami, Florida. While in Miami, Dr. Morales received her undergraduate from University in Miami. She then completed a wildlife internship at Disney's Animal Kingdom Veterinary Hospital. After Dr. Morales' internship, she attended the University of Florida where she received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and received a certificate in Aquatic Animal Health. She continued to work with wildlife and exotics through several externships at different zoos and aquariums. Dr. Morales has special interests in veterinary medicine including geriatric hospice medicine, dermatology and wildlife rehabilitative medicine. Outside of the veterinary field, she has an affinity for yoga, salsa and bachata dancing, cooking and water related activities. Dr. Morales has two dogs; a 'perfect angel' collie mix named Luna who she adopted during vet school and a 'crazy monster' golden retriever, Max, who she adopted in 2019.
